Where will you sit on the beach at La Herradura? On this bay you will find everything: hidden snorkeling spots, laid-back beach bars, good breakfast spots and fine places to supper or just lie with your feet in the sand. In this blog we share the best spots along the beach, from left to right - so you know exactly where you want to perch.
On the left side of the bay - past the little port of Marina del Este - is a small, almost private beach. No catering, no queues, just pebbles, crystal clear water and tranquility. Local diving schools use this stretch of coast to give lessons: the underwater cliffs are perfect for snorkeling and diving. With a little experience, you'll paddle here in no time on your sup, although it's not the place for beginners.
On the other side of the bay, where the official beach begins, sits Chambao de Joaquín. A classic among beach joints. From around one o'clock, the air fills with the smell of charcoal and fish. Order a plate of sardines or grilled shrimp and rent a bed for the rest of the afternoon. No complicated fuss, just good beach food in the sun.
Fancy something easy or a quick bite to eat? A little further towards the middle of the bay you will find Lisboa, a snack bar with hearty burgers and to-go coffees. Ideal for those who want to grab something for the beach, or if you're out early in the morning. Also a great place to end the day with something unhealthy after all that healthy seawater.
At the height of Playa Mango and Szimple you're in the right place if you want to start or end your day in style. Szimple serves breakfast you'll come back for: think smoothie bowls, pancakes and good coffee. Playa Mango in turn is a fine spot for a sumptuous lunch on the beach. The strip of sand here is perhaps a little less atmospheric than on the other side of the bay, but practical it is: nearby sits Windsurf La Herradura, where you can rent kayaks or sup boards.
At the end of the promenade is Chambao de Vicente - Another one of those places where you linger. The water here is calm, you can snorkel well (although the mini-beach on the other side is just a bit nicer). From this corner you can easily get on the sup towards Playa Calaiza, a small secluded cove down the road. A little more energy left? Then paddle on to the caves of La Herradura or even all the way to Playa Cantarriján.
In short: Those who think that all you can do at La Herradura beach is lie down are mistaken. This cove is there to be explored, tasted and, above all, enjoyed - with sand between your toes and a good plate of food at your fingertips.
