Casa de la Joya

A stately palace that preserves Torrox's civic past in stone

On one of the quietest streets in Torrox Pueblo, Casa de la Joya towers above it all. Built in the 19th century, this former palace was the home of the Sevilla-Medina family: wine merchants with their own fleet, and influence far beyond the region. In January 1885, King Alfonso XII stayed here after the earthquake that struck the region. The wrought-iron gate still bears the name "José Sevilla 1864. You cannot enter the building, but a walk along it reveals details in the facade, balconies and symmetry that recall a time of wealth and prestige. Today the building is used as a courthouse, but if you look closely, you can still see the story of power and prestige.
