Someone asked a good question the other day:
"We were driving through Almuñécar and for a moment we thought we had a flat tire. Such a scraping sound under the car. But everything turned out fine. Turned out everyone had it. Even cyclists, and walkers wearing sneakers. What was that?"
Well, here it comes: candle wax.
In the days following Semana Santa - the holy week full of impressive processions - some streets are coated with an almost invisible layer of wax. No joke. All those long candles carried along through the narrow streets of Almuñécar, La Herradura, Nerja, Frigiliana and Torrox? Those drip.
And all that candle wax settles silently on the stones and asphalt. During the day it melts, at night it cools again. Result: a slightly slippery feeling under your tires, your soles, your bicycle tires. Sounds goofy, it is a bit.
It's not oil. Not a flat tire. Not a made-up mystery. Just a subtle seasonal phenomenon that you only notice when you know where it comes from.
Next year you will know.
And you might smile for a moment when you hear that soft sound again at the stoplight.
