Hidden caves at La Herradura

Two magical caves hidden in the cliffs, accessible by kayak or SUP.

Hidden in the rocks of La Herradura
Taking a break from the beach towel? Hop in a kayak or on a SUP and explore two hidden caves in the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo nature reserve. This coastline is rugged, wild and quiet - just what you're looking for when you want something different from the standard beach day.
Cueva de las Palomas: emerald green and full of life
After a leisurely trip of about 30 minutes, you reach the first cave: Cueva de las Palomas. You can partially paddle into it - the space opens up like a small cathedral, with orange coral on the walls and emerald green water that almost gives off light. Bring your snorkel: below the surface it teems with colorful anemones, transparent shrimp and curious octopuses.
Cueva del Sifón: the underwater cathedral
Paddle a little further, and you come to the impressive Cueva del Sifón. This cave is bigger and darker, with a giant opening in the shape of an inverted V. Inside, around noon, a beam of light falls in through a small opening at the top - as if you were in an underwater church. Here there is even a bubble in which you can breathe and talk. Magical, without being overdone.
Picnic on Playa Calaiza or continue to Cantarriján
Time for lunch? Halfway along the route is Playa Calaiza, a small, quiet cove where you can pop ashore for a sandwich or swim. Prefer a chiringuito? Then paddle on to Playa Cantarriján, where you'll find cold beer and hot sardines.
