Day trip to Mijas from Málaga

Where are you pulling from?

→ Departure by your own transportation
From Málaga you can drive to Mijas Pueblo in just under half an hour. Follow the A-7 towards Fuengirola and take the exit to Mijas. Parking is easiest in Parking Virgen de la Peña, just below the center. On weekends or Wednesdays (flamenco day), it's smart to go early - parking spots are scarce then.

→ Departure by excursion or public transportation
No car? From Malaga there are daily buses to Mijas (line M-112 or M-121 towards Fuengirola, change to M-122). Count on about 50 minutes travel time. You can also book an organized tour including a guide and stops at beautiful viewpoints - ideal if you don't feel like puzzling yourself out.

Where should you be?

The core of the village surrounds Plaza Virgen de la Peña, a lively square with sea views, flower pots against the walls, buskers and sidewalk cafes. From here you can go in every direction: the viewpoint, the botanical garden, the miniature museum and the streets full of arts and crafts.

What can you do there?

  1. Strolling along white streets full of flowers
Typically Andalusian, with azure pots on the walls and alleys where you want to get lost.
  2. The view from Paseo de la Muralla
A footpath above the village with panoramas over the mountains and sea. Especially at sunset: magical.
  3. Visit to Plaza de Toros
Spain's smallest bullfighting arena, now used for flamenco performances and exhibitions.
  4. Tuk Tuk tour of the village
With a local guide, you'll ride electric past the highlights of the village - a joyful and informative ride.
  5. Flamenco on Wednesday or Saturday (free!)
Plaza Virgen de la Peña often hosts a mid-day show - traditional, compelling and free to attend.

Top restaurants for brunch, lunch and dinner

  1. La Alcazaba de Mijas - Sea views, Andalusian classics on level.
  2. Pampa Tablas y Tapas - Fine tapas place in a cozy street.
  3. Alboka Gastro - Creative Spanish cuisine with modern twist.
  4. Restaurante El Capricho - Authentic, well-priced, with patio.
  5. The Lemon Tree - Cozy for coffee or light lunch, with homemade cake.

What time do you have to get back?

If you are by public transport, plan your return trip on time. The last buses towards Málaga usually leave Mijas around 20:00 (check the timetables of Avanza or Consorcio de Transporte). Tip: download the app Moovit or check Google Maps for real-time departure times.

By car you are more flexible - although it is also nice to drive back via the coast around sunset and stop somewhere spontaneous for tapas along the way.
