Home " Experiences " Visit the Las Alpujarras
Those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast for a while will find in La Alpujarra a world still living in the rhythm of yesterday. This mountainous region on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada is a patchwork of narrow roads, terraced fields and whitewashed houses clinging to the hills. Villages like Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira look like they came out of a postcard, with chimneys steaming above flat roofs and donkey trails still used daily. The air here is clear, the views expansive, and the silence almost tangible.
La Alpujarra is a feast for hikers, with trails like the GR-7 that take you from village to village along mountain streams and chestnut groves. But even without sturdy hiking boots, you can get lost here - lost in the good kind. Stroll past handmade rugs, taste goat cheese or jamón serrano in a local bar, and be surprised by an unexpected mirador overlooking a valley that seems to dissolve in the light. Each village requires at least a few hours, so plan your visit with room to get lost. Parking is often free but limited - come early or take your time.
