El Acebuchal is tucked away in the rugged mountains between Frigiliana and Cómpeta - an almost forgotten place that was uninhabited for years, until a few determined families brought the village back to life. The white cottages, surrounded by steep mountain sides and fragrant pine forests, feel as if they have slipped out of another time. No traffic, no stores, no street lights. Just the sound of your footsteps, a stream in the distance and the smell of freshly baked bread. As you walk through the village, you pass ancient ruins and hear stories of refugees, shepherds and rebuilders - history is in the stones here.
El Acebuchal is ideal for a half-day of unwinding. Whether you come for a brisk walk, a plate of game stew or a peek into the life of the past - you'll find it all here. Bar Restaurante El Acebuchal is famous far and wide and serves local classics with a view that will make you quiet. There are several hiking trails in the area, ranging from leisurely strolls to tough mountain hikes. Parking is available along the river or at the back of the village (limited). From Nerja you drive there in 30 minutes, from Almuñécar about 45 minutes. Tip: search for "The Lost Village" in Google Maps. For those still in doubt - we also wrote a blog about this special place.
