On top of the hill near the Castillo de San Miguel is hidden a surprising piece of nature: Parque Loro Sexi. This bird park is home to more than 100 species of winged inhabitants - from bright green parrots and curious parakeets to regal peacocks roaming freely among the trees. But it's not just birds you'll encounter here. The greenery is also home to lemurs, suricats and turtles, making the park feel more like a mini-zoo in a botanical setting. The combination of birdsong, exotic plants and sea views makes this place a relaxing getaway full of color and wonder.
Parque Loro Sexi is compact - you're through it in about 45 minutes - but well worth the effort. Especially for families with children, it is a nice activity that can easily be combined with a visit to the nearby castle or beach. The entrance fee is friendly: €4 for adults and €2 for children. In low season (October to March), the park is closed on Mondays, but otherwise it is open daily with split opening hours. Food and drinks are not for sale, so feel free to bring something with you or plan your lunch downstairs in the town afterwards. With its hilltop location, the park also offers stunning views of Almuñécar and the Mediterranean Sea - a bonus on any visit.
