On one of the quietest streets in Torrox Pueblo, Casa de la Joya towers above it all. Built in the 19th century, this former palace was the home of the Sevilla-Medina family: wine merchants with their own fleet, and influence far beyond the region. In January 1885, King Alfonso XII stayed here after the earthquake that struck the region. The wrought-iron gate still bears the name "José Sevilla 1864. You cannot enter the building, but a walk along it reveals details in the facade, balconies and symmetry that recall a time of wealth and prestige. Today the building is used as a courthouse, but if you look closely, you can still see the story of power and prestige.
