Below Torrox's lighthouse, overlooking the sea, lies one of the Costa del Sol's best-kept secrets: the Roman ruins of Caviclum. In 1905, the lighthouse keeper began digging - and found what was once a bustling Roman settlement, complete with bathhouse, villa, necropolis and a factory for garum (fish sauce, a favorite of the Romans). The excavation reveals mosaics, murals in ochre and red, and an atrium with an impluvium - a water collection tank at the heart of the dwelling. It feels as if the residents might return at any moment. History reaches deep here, from Neolithic habitation to Roman luxury and Arab agriculture. A getaway for those who want to wander among stones and centuries, while the sea breathes gently in the background.
