Walking where kings used to come
The Caminito del Rey is no ordinary hike. Balancing up to 100 meters above the Guadalhorce River, this narrow path takes you past steep cliffs, through tunnels and over bridges with breathtaking views of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes. Once built as a maintenance path for workers at the dams, it became world-famous when King Alfonso XIII walked it in 1921 - since then known as “the King's Path.”.
Today, the trail is safe, but still exciting. You walk across wooden walkways suspended from the rock face and look out over limestone gorges, green forests and quietly flowing rivers. The trail begins at the visitor center in Ardales, where you'll also learn more about the trail's history, dams and the role of the river.
For hikers with guts (and good shoes)
The Caminito del Rey is suitable for anyone with a little fitness and sturdy shoes. Children as young as 8 years old are allowed, but the path is not suitable for people with severe vertigo or mobility problems. If you go with a guide, you'll get fun facts and stories along the way about the flora, fauna and technical feats that once made this trail possible.
An average hike takes about 3 to 4 hours. Bring plenty of water, wear comfortable clothing and don't forget your camera - this is not a view you'll soon encounter again.
