Visit to the Castillo de La Herradura
Between cannons, seascapes and stories of the past
A castle with salt in the walls
In the heart of La Herradura, just off the beach, stands a sturdy stone fortress that centuries ago watched over the coastline: the Castillo de La Herradura. Once built to stop pirates and invaders, today it is a place full of stories. Inside you will find the museum "1562, the Fury of the Sea," which takes you back to the time of great naval battles and tragic maritime disasters. Everything is conveniently presented: models of galleys, old weapons, paintings and maps. And outside? There you look out over the bay where it all happened - an impressive setting for a lesson in outdoor history.
For curious families and maritime enthusiasts
Whether you're out on your own, with your partner or with kids, this castle is a wonderful change from beach days and tapas lunches. You can walk through it at your leisure in an hour or two, with plenty to see and learn along the way. The entrance fee is friendly (€4 per adult, €2.50 for children and pensioners), and nearby are plenty of places for a drink afterwards. The Castillo is open Tuesday through Sunday and closes its gates on Mondays. A little time travel in a cool jacket, right in the middle of La Herradura.
